This big display was what greeted everyone upon entering.

The Winter Wonder Festival 2026

February 2026

The last time I attended WonFes was in 2018, and that time I only took video but did not take pictures. After eight years, I've returned to WonFes. Things have changed considerably! It used to be that your ticket into the event was a little, thick book with all the vendors' information. Now admission is handled with a wristband everyone receives after paying admission.

It was snowing in Tokyo and Chiba, and I wished that I had worn snow boots. Walking from the train station to Makuhari Messe where the event is held every time, people were slipping on the snow, as well as myself. Once I arrived, I had to stand in line. Same-day ticket purchasers had to wait until 11am before we were allowed to enter.

This was my first time attending the Winter WonFes as I've only ever atttended the Summer WonFes in the past. As always, the event is comprised of three large convention halls. This event will impress people in different ways. I was focusing on older anime and video game items. I saw some garage kit figures that were attracting quite a crowd. GKs where people were crowding around, taking photos. I couldn't recognize those characters, so I just passed by. Because of the crazy amount of people, the crowds make traversing the convention halls a bit difficult and movement is slow.

Well, let's look at the pictures I took, starting with Hasegawa's table.

So here is the upcoming 1:72 Nousjadeul-Ger mecha kit! Since they've released four Queadluun-Rau kits already in both the DYRL and now most recently the TV series versions, it was only time before a DYRL N-Ger kit would be released. While the differences between the TV and DYRL versions of the Q-Rau are minor, the differences for the N-Ger are significant and frankly I've never cared for the TV version. Imai made a kit of it back in the '80s.

WonFes is famous for resin kits, and Hasegawa had their 1:12 Cat's Eye resin kits on display. I passed on their Minmay kit they released recently because the eye decals just didn't look good. They didn't stay true to the Mikimoto designs.

Hasegawa's Eggplane Girl resin kits are great fun. They'll come out with a Claire Frost "Oni" ("ogre") kit. Westerners will recognize this look from Lum from Urusei Yatsura, but she's dressed as a Japanese traditional ogre from folklore.

Left: Hasegawa's Ultraman kits. Right: Here we're starting with the private garage kit makers with these SNK and Capcom ladies. The skin and hair color on the Mai figure looks weird.

Right: These mecha are from Patlabor.

Alright, I really hope you like shmup games, because I took a lot of pictures of shmup ship kits. Here are Thunderforce kits.

These are gachapon for R-Type Final 2 by Toys Cabin! Toys Cabin is a gachapon maker and I know the man who started this company. I worked with him at Aoshima and he quit before I did because neither of us could tolerate the POS "bosshole" as I call him. I actually saw him later while walking around. I turned my head and he noticed me too. I haven't seen him in a very long time. He told me the last time that he'd had to really sell lots of cheaper gachapon without license to turn a profit. I'm excited to see that he's doing these R-Type ships. These are actually those blind-boxed deluxe gachapon/toys.

Plenty of Votoms stuff. These are 3D printed.

Max Factory will now join Wave and Bandai in making Votoms kits.

Mospeada!

Left: This Tachikoma was actually motorized. Rather impressive. Right: It's the girl from Ridge Racer 4! I was in college when this came out, and I had a crush on her, with her sexy short hair.

I have no idea what character this is, but she looks beautiful! I thought maybe it was the girl from the Sega game Arabian Fight, but I don't think so.

Left: Evangelion stuff got sold out quickly at the event. Right: Busts of characters from Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Area 88.

Left: I thought these sharks looked neat. I thought about maybe buying one for my daughter. Sharks really knock her out. Right: Tiny little Area 88 plane kits. 1:200 scale!

More shmup love: Argus and R-Type. This R-Type ship is the Happy Days.

The Daedalus and Arrowhead from R-Type.

Left: The Concert Master from R-Type.

Left: The Delta from R-Type. Right: The Desperado from Gun Fronteir. My friend Lou has this game on the Saturn, but I never got around to picking it up.

Left: A huge boss from one of the Gradius games. This one had pulsating lights, so lighting this kit is certainly a possibility. Right: The Black Fly... I believe it's from the Taito shmup, Metal Black.

Left: The ship from Axelay! Right: A wild variation of the R-Gray from Layer Section.

Left: Devil Blade. Right: The Vic Viper.

Left: The fighters from Salamander. Right: The fighters from Salamander 2.

Left: The fighters from Salamander 3! Right: A Big Core ship from Gradius.

Gradius bosses. Like I said, there were a lot of shmup kits there.

This was so cool! Here is Apple from Zillion and Reika from Time Gal.

Right: Buletta from Vampire Savior. I love this character for how crazy she is. I once had a Capcom action figure of her when I first lived in Japan 25 years ago, but her hand couldn't hold the uzi very well.

Right: Conan and Lana from Future Boy Conan!

Left: Noa from Patlabor. Right: The Minerva from Crusher Joe.

This Pac-Man sofubi was tempting, but not for 7,000 yen. I passed. On the right is a Pop 'n Music arcade cab, probably 1:12 scale.

Left: Helmets from Patlabor. Right: Here starts a lot of figures from SNK and Capcom fighting games.

OK, so these jack-looking things are placed along the coastlines to protect from tsunamis. This vendor knitted these jacks and even turned on into a lamp. Wild.

Right: Dirty Pair. This set is 1:8 scale and the next one is 1:6 scale.

Nadia!

I was so happy to see a Nadia kit. I'm a sucker for Nadia figure kits, and I already own so many. This one was cute, but for 15,000 yen it was easy to walk away from it. Plus she's a bit flat-chested here for some reason.

SD Macross stuff.

This alpaca kit is called Kidou Senshi Alpaca, with the name and the font a spoof on Gundam.

Left: Maetel sofubi figures from Galaxy Express 999. Right: Minmay kits!

This is basically the same as the Hasegawa resin kit that recently came out, but you'll see that this one has much better eyes.

These Grandia figures were a pleasant surprise. I was so tempted to buy the Feena one, but I did not.

So these next several ones are large-scaled R-Type kits by a 3D-printing model company in Nagoya. They're brand new.

Left: This was at Kotobukiya's booth. A half-scale figure of Ranma 1/2! I cannot imagine how much it wil cost. Right: OK, so this action figure won't mean much to many outside of Japan, but this man is the main character of a daily TV show called "The Solitary Gourmet." Every episode, this man eats fantastic food at various restaurants. There really isn't much of a plot. This actor must have a pretty easy job. All he does is eat great food and doesn't need to memorize many lines. This is mostly a "feel good" show without a lot of substance. My wife watches this every day. It's based on a manga.

After going through all three convention halls, I met up with my friends Adrian and Jason. Adrian introduced me to his other friends who were there. They showed me the stuff they'd bought and I was surprised to see so many things that I did not notice while I went through everything. There is just so much to see and do at this event that it's impossible to see it all. I was disappointed that Aoshima and Fujimi were not there. But, if Aoshima was there, I would have been caught up talking to many people from there I know and it would've taken me longer to get through and see everything.

I left with Adrian, Jason and the others and we went to dinner at DevilCraft in Gotanda, a Chicago-style pizza restaurant. Adrian had taken Jason and I there after the 2023 All-Japan Hobby Show the year before last. This time, we had Detroit-style pizza. I'd never heard of that before. After that, we went to the nearby Big Echo karaoke place across from Gotanda Station and sang lots of songs by The Smiths, New Order, Joy Division, Tears For Fears, The Stone Roses, David Bowie, Primal Scream, and others. I had to leave a bit early though, since I had to take a shinkansen back home. I slept most of the way home on the train, between Omiya and Takasaki. It was a great night.
