Background:
Unfortunately, the first Front Mission game to see American release was Front Mission 3 for the Playstation. The series dates back to the Super Famicom. Front Mission: Gun Hazard was a departure from the original Front Mission, which was a mecha strategy game. Instead, Gun Hazard was a side-scrolling platform mecha game, much like Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken and Target Earth/Assault Suits Leynos. To me, this makes the game much more importable. My introduction to the series was when I tried playing Front Mission Alternative on the Playstation, but I gave up because I couldn't understand the Japanese very well at all.
The Game:
As I mentioned above, Gun Hazard is a side scrolling platform game in which you assume the role of Albert Grabner, a mecha pilot. The playability is very similar to Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken. However, in this game you are presented with a map to travel around on for the storyline to progress. Graphics are very impressive, as well as the sound. There is a lot of Japanese dialogue to go through, however there is a walkthrough available for the game on the Net that explains the storyline.
Overall:
I can't help comparing this game to Masaya/NCS's Assault Suits Valken. However, it's a bit more involved than a typical platform shooter. For someone looking for a casual mecha platformer, I'd suggest Masaya's game. Gun Hazard features quite a lot of Japanese text to go through, and this can be rather boring and frustrating if you can't understand Japanese. Recommended for fans of the Front Mission series looking for something new. The interesting thing about this game and Valken is that Assault Suits Valken 2 for the Playstation is a strategy more along the lines of a typical Front Mission game, while Gun Hazard has more in common with the Valken game for the SFC than other games in the Front Mission series.
